Types of Bonded Warehouses and Their Advantages
Bonded warehouses are general or private storage facilities where goods under customs supervision are placed. According to customs legislation, bonded warehouses are categorized into two main groups—General and Private—and are further divided into six distinct types.
1. General Bonded Warehouses
General bonded warehouses are facilities that can be used by anyone for the storage of goods. In these facilities, the warehouse operator and the user of the space may be different parties.
2. Private Bonded Warehouses
Private bonded warehouses are established solely for the storage of goods belonging to the warehouse operator.
-
Type C Warehouse: A type of private warehouse where the operator and the user are the same entity. Companies store their own imported products in these areas until they are cleared through customs.
-
Type D Warehouse: The operator and the user are the same entity. The primary advantage here is that the value of the goods at the date of entry into the warehouse is taken into account, and goods can be withdrawn using simplified customs procedures.
-
Type E Warehouse: The operator and the user are the same entity. This is a special case where the location where the goods are stored is not technically designated as a warehouse, but the provisions of the bonded warehouse regime are applied by the customs administration (e.g., a company's own facility being temporarily accepted as a bonded area).
What Are the Advantages of Using a Bonded Warehouse?
-
Tax Deferral: Customs duties are not paid as long as the products remain in the bonded warehouse. Taxes are only settled when the products are cleared for free circulation (nationalized) and released to the market.
-
Unlimited Storage Duration: Goods can remain in bonded warehouses until they are assigned a customs-approved treatment or use.
-
Partial Withdrawal: You can withdraw only the amount of product you need from customs and continue to store the remainder, tax-free.
-
Facilitation of Transit Trade: You can send products to another country in transit without officially importing them into Turkey.
-
Note: When determining your logistics strategy, choosing the warehouse type that best suits your product category and operational speed will directly impact your costs.
